High Availability Computing Solutions

High Availability (HA) refers to availability of computing resources in the event of component failures in the system. HA solutions range from solutions that provide software solutions using off-the-shelf hardware components to solutions that utilize custom and redundant hardware to ensure availability, at a significantly higher cost.

High Availability Levels (HAL) for computing solutions defines the downtime/year and time/outage (time to recover from failure). For example, a typical standalone system running 24x7 can achieve 99.5% availability in conjunction with a recovery time of 4 hours/outage. These High Availability Level -2 (HAL-2) systems are generally used in typical office environments. Following is a summary of high availability solutions and their typical characteristics:

HP Serviceguard solutions are the foundation of many of these high-availability and disaster-tolerant solutions. HP Serviceguard solutions enhance application availability and maintain service levels through dynamic resource re-allocation. These solutions are designed to protect mission-critical applications from a wide variety of hardware and software failures. HP Serviceguard groups multiple servers into a cluster to provide highly available application services that enhance data integrity. Within the cluster, HP Serviceguard monitors the health and status of software and hardware components and uses cluster management tools to efficiently manage multiple systems. HP Serviceguard Manager with its graphical user interface is used to reduce the total cost managing multiple clusters from a single console.

Nadicent provides consulting and implementation services for Cluster and Grid (HPC) computing solutions. These solutions consist of industry-standard servers, HP-UX, Linux or Windows® Operating Systems, and supporting middleware options. Nadicent has deployed clustering solutions for many enterprises including Fortune 500 companies. Many of these solutions included integration with SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) and Tibco environments.

Following are some of the examples of high availability solutions implemented by Nadicent:
