There’s no reason for alarm with Google Play Service’s latest release of v25.14. The update includes a smartphone update now forcing a reboot after three days of inactivity. Since some of us barely let our phones cool for three minutes much less go three hours without use, this security update is a helpful tool—that is, as long as you remember your PIN.

Why A 3-Day Forced Reboot

There are practical reasons why Google included the reboot feature in this update. Triggering it means your pin is vital for your smartphone to fully function, and that comes in handy with certain instances. For example, in most cases if your phone is inactive for three days, it could mean your it was lost or stolen. In the hands of bad actors, extracting sensitive data like banking info, emails, photos, and more without the PIN is more difficult. It also gives a cybercriminal reason to move on to another victim.

Something every Android user should acknowledge is those who aren’t tech savvy. Whether friends or family, helping them navigate this update means making sure they have their PIN memorized or written down in a safe spot. It’s the right thing to do for those you care about.

It’s easy for us to forget about the benefits of rebooting. “When in doubt, reboot” is still a critical part of a well-functioning device. This remarkably simple act does wonders, although the payback may not be obvious. All devices benefit from a reboot.
