Cyber crooks are leveling up with so-called task scams, and Trend Micro’s “Unmasking Task Scams” report shines a harsh light on how they’re turning side gigs into dangerous traps.

Here’s how it works: You get a message—maybe via SMS, WhatsApp, or Telegram—offering a simple job like “liking” videos or posting product reviews for pay. At first, they give you a few cents to win your trust. That’s the hook.

Then comes the twist. These gigs are now a game.  They offer VIP levels, achievement streaks, reward systems—it all feels like a game meant to keep you playing (and paying). Once you’re hooked, scammers demand a deposit ("double tasks") before you can withdraw what you’ve “earned.” Of course, once you pay, you never see a dime back. That’s how victims end up bleeding money—anywhere from a few hundred bucks to hundreds of thousands. Researchers even traced crypto wallets receiving $187,000 in under two months, and another linked to over $1.2 million in transactions. Some actually have real people “mentoring” you.

Worse, some of these operations are incredibly slick: they impersonate real firms, but use fake websites, and register domains through shady registrars to look legit. Roughly 39% of victims only realize they’ve been scammed after the money is gone.

So what can you do?

  • Never pay money to earn more. That’s a sure sign of a scam.

  • Be skeptical of unsolicited job offers, especially those pitched over texts or social media.

  • Always verify the company directly, through official websites or trusted contacts.

Stay alert—those "easy gigs" can come with serious hidden costs. Make sure you know what gig you’re getting into before your hard-earned pay is gone.
